Meal time doesn't have to be a big to do. It can be a wonderful time for families to come together at the end of a long day at work or school. There will be times when you will want to prepare very elaborate feasts for your family to enjoy, but trying to do that every night could become a bit cumbersome. Sometimes, you just want your food done quickly.

Here are a few tips to make meal time a bit easier and enjoyable:

1. Season as much as you can in advance. If you want meats that are well seasoned and tender, try seasoning them when you buy them. Then, repackage them for freezing. This will eliminate some of the last minute prep work. Take care to maintain proper food handling techniques and try not to freeze and thaw your foods multiple times. Too much handling of the meat, in particular, can cause bacteria and a less than pleasant taste.

2. Use a crock pot. Not only are crock pots cheap to buy, they are also one of the healthiest ways to cook because they require very little, if any, oils or fats. You can set a crock pot in the morning before you leave the house and let it slow cook all day. If there is enough stock, or natural juices, in the pot, chances are the food will not burn or scorch. Because of its slow, simmering properties, cooking with a crock pot will render your meats and vegetables perfectly tender. Some people even prepare starches in their crock pot such as homemade macaroni and cheese. For many, having a crock pot is a great time saver. If you are not comfortable leaving it on through the day, you can prepare the meal the night before and let the crock pot cook through the night. In the morning, simply place the food in the refrigerator for dinner that night. It will make things so easy.

3. Eat salad. Salads are a perfect food. Either as a full meal or as a compliment to an entree, salads are a very versatile and healthy eating option. Salads are readily available in supermarkets, and they are relatively inexpensive. The key to eating salad is to flavor it with things that are not high in fat so that it maintains its nutritional value.

4. Plan your meals. Of course, the easiest way to prepare a family meal is by having someone else actually make the dishes. That's what keeps the fast food chains in business. But, your meals can be just as simple if you plan them out. You could even prepare the meal in advance and freeze it for when you need it. Take time out to buy and prepare as much as possible in advance. By planning your meals, you will be able to quickly enjoy your meals.

Eating with others is one of the most natural social instincts that we have. It's evident when a mother or father feeds a baby for the first time. The bond that is created is almost instant, and the conversations that are had with only the eyes are absolutely priceless. As a family, it is important to continue to make eating together a mainstay in your lives. Family meal time is a great way to share your daily life experiences. The dialogue that can be had over a pleasant family meal may be a key factor in what keeps families happy and connected.

When we take the time to hear what each other has to say, to acknowledge people's opinions and thoughts, to show support and pride, we strengthen our family unit. So, even though we want to make our meals simple and, a bit easier, we should do our best not to overlook the fact that we need to know that we matter in each other's lives. So, share a meal, share a memory, and enjoy sharing your lives together as a family.
